Description

Make delightful homemade Pop Tarts with premade pie crusts, filled with sweet strawberry jam, and topped with a smooth, colorful icing and sprinkles. This easy-to-follow recipe delivers a fun, heart-shaped treat perfect for breakfast or a snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Pop Tarts

  • 2 Refrigerated Premade Pie Crusts (at room temperature)
  • Strawberry Jam (about 10 tablespoons)
  • 1 Egg (for egg wash)

Icing

  • 1/2 Cup Confectioners Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Milk
  • 1/2 Tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Drop Red Food Coloring
  • Sprinkles (red and pink)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F to prepare for baking the Pop Tarts.
  2. Prepare Pie Crust: Unroll the premade pie crusts onto a baker’s mat, parchment paper, or a floured counter surface for easy cutting.
  3. Cut Heart Shapes: Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out as many hearts as possible from the dough. Rotate the cutter to maximize usage. Knead and roll remaining dough to 1/8 inch thickness and cut additional hearts.
  4. Add Filling: Place one tablespoon of strawberry jam in the center of half of the cut hearts. The jam doesn’t need to be spread evenly as it will distribute during baking.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, beat the egg. Brush the edges of the jam-filled hearts with the egg wash to help seal.
  6. Seal Pop Tarts: Place a plain heart cutout on top of each jam-filled one. Seal edges together with fingers, then crimp all edges using a fork to ensure they’re properly closed.
  7. Poke Holes & Egg Wash: Use the fork to poke small holes on the top of each pop tart to release steam during baking. Brush the entire top surface with egg wash.
  8. Bake: Bake the pop tarts in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Cool: Remove the pies from the oven and place them on a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Make Icing: While cooling, whisk together confectioner’s sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add one drop of red food coloring and mix well.
  11. Ice the Pop Tarts: Spoon icing onto the cooled pop tarts and smooth it out with the back of the spoon or a small spatula. Decorate with red and pink sprinkles as desired.

Notes

  • Using premade pie crusts saves time but ensure they’re at room temperature for easy handling.
  • Be careful not to overfill with jam to avoid leaking during baking.
  • Crimping edges thoroughly seals the pop tarts and prevents jam from spilling out.
  • Poking holes on top helps steam escape, preventing sogginess.
  • Allow pop tarts to cool completely before icing to prevent melting.
  • Customize fillings and icing colors for festive variations.
