Description

Thai Basil Chicken (Gai Pad Krapow) is a flavorful and spicy stir-fry dish featuring ground chicken cooked with aromatic Thai herbs, chilies, and basil, served over steamed rice for a quick and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Meats & Oils

  • 3 to 4 tablespoons oil

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 3 Thai bird chilies or holland chilies (de-seeded if desired and thinly sliced)
  • 3 shallots (thinly sliced)
  • 5 cloves garlic (sliced)

Proteins & Sauces

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (or honey)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce

Liquids & Herbs

  • 1/3 cup low sodium chicken broth (or water)
  • 1 bunch holy or Thai basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Prepare ingredients: Gather all ingredients and slice the chilies, shallots, garlic, and basil leaves to keep everything ready for quick cooking.
  2. Cook aromatics: In a wok or large skillet over high heat, add the oil, chilies, shallots, and garlic, and fry for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and slightly softened.
  3. Add chicken: Add the ground chicken to the wok and stir-fry for about 2 minutes, breaking it into small bits until mostly cooked through.
  4. Add sauces and seasoning: Mix in the sugar, soy sauce, and fish sauce, stirring well to coat the chicken evenly. Continue stir-frying for another minute.
  5. Deglaze with broth: Pour in the chicken broth to deglaze the pan, stirring to incorporate, and cook until the liquid reduces quickly, approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  6. Add basil leaves: Turn off heat and stir in the basil leaves until wilted and fragrant. Serve immediately over steamed rice.

Notes

  • Adjust the number of chilies according to your heat preference.
  • You can substitute fresh Thai basil with Thai holy basil if available for more authentic flavor.
  • To make it less spicy, deseed the chilies before slicing.
  • Ensure the wok is hot enough for quick stir-frying to keep the ingredients flavorful and tender.
